Although it has been 78 years, Buchek said her memories of the Marine Corps era are as vivid as ever.
No matter how old they are, every Marine remembers the moment they decided to enlist, including Cpl. Madeleine Bucek.
She joined in 1943. Why the Marine Corps? Well, the Navy is impossible.
“My friends are going, they are in the waves. I can’t swim,” she said.
As the male Marines were transported to the Pacific to fight, the female Marines were assigned to the United States to perform missions. Like their male counterparts, the female Marines participated in boot camps and received training in weapon systems. Although she was an excellent shooter, Bucek eventually ran a Marine Corps’ switchboard to train pilots.

“There are 10,000 men and 40 women,” she said.
Bucek said that her life as the Marine Corps was interesting and sometimes humorous, but the accommodation conditions were typical of the Marine Corps nature: minimal.
“We let the people there breathe a sigh of relief, it’s kind of like an old stable,” she said.
Buchek is very proud of her service. Trailblazers like her will eventually open doors of opportunity for today’s female Marines.
“I think it’s great,” she said. “I think it’s great that they allow this now.”

The Marine Corps has a tradition. On the birthday of the Marine Corps, the oldest and youngest Marines present get the first piece of cake. Buchek and Ross Guidotti have no cakes and no grand parties, but in the tradition of their beloved team, they use cupcakes to make what they deserve.
