Fort Meade, Maryland (WJZ) — Hundreds of active servicemen attended the Thanksgiving dinner at the base because many were unable to return home to reunite with their families.

The Fort Meade commander wanted to make sure these men and women had a traditional turkey and ham dinner, but Melba Taylor, the contract manager for the food service staff, said they liked to add some surprises.

“We have steak, lobster tails, shrimp, and various desserts. A: Almost any dessert you can imagine,” Taylor said.

After 19 years of serving this meal to men and women in uniform, Taylor said she would not miss this opportunity.

“It is an honor to serve those who serve us,” Taylor said. “These young people are as old as my son. Seeing the joy on their faces and giving them hope makes them happier.”

Kourtney Nunnery is a first-class soldier in the Army, training away from her family in Fayetteville. “I really appreciate that they came out and cooked us good food,” Nunnery said. She has a day off at work and hopes to be with friends who have become more like family. “

I heard that the bowling alley is open, so I might go to bowling, but other than that, I will relax, because these weeks are very stressful,” Nunnery added.

Derick Fennell is also a first-class soldier in the army. “This is the first time I have left my family on Thanksgiving,” he said. “They made all the traditional food that my mother would cook, and when I had a FaceTime call with her, I would tell her,’Look, they have cheesecake, they have macaroni, they have everything.'”

Fennell said he also made some friends, who were his family members when he was away. “We have no family, but we are one family, so laughing, giggling, and watching movies with them is a new tradition. I think it will be a good rhythm change,” Fennell added. “They put it all on Thanksgiving, and I really appreciate it.”
