Malden (CBS)-The murder of 17-year-old Patricia Moreno in Malden in 1991 has been arrested. Police arrested 48-year-old Rodney Daniels in Georgia on Monday.
The shooting took place on July 20, 1991, in a three-story apartment building on Henry Street. The 17-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound to the head.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said on Wednesday: “This investigation has gone through many twists and turns in 30 years.”
Ryan announced his arrest, partly due to a new witness. “He provided a physical description of the person he saw on the fire escape ladder,” Ryan said.
At the time of the shooting, Patricia’s adoptive mother, adopted sister, and Rodney Daniels were dating one of the sisters.
“They claimed that they heard two gunshots, but there was no information about the identity of the gunman,” Ryan said.
This is the new witness testimony and the information about the suspect that the police have. At the time of the murder, he had multiple guns and even threatened her a few weeks before the victim’s death.
This is the first case solved by the cold box department recently established by Middlesex DA.
Ryan said: “This case demonstrates the office’s commitment that we will not give up when someone loses a loved one due to homicide.”
Malden police said it was a bittersweet day, but sent a message to the families of the victims and suspects. Malden Police Chief Kevin Morris said: “If someone commits a crime, please tell us the news and we will not forget it.”
Daniels will be taken back to Massachusetts on Thursday to face first-degree murder charges.
