Police said at least 12 pilgrims were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a stampede at a Hindu shrine in Kashmir on Saturday morning.
Senior police officer Mukesh Singh said: “In the early hours of this morning, a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine killed 12 pilgrims and injured 14 others.”
He said that all the injured have been hospitalized.
Another official said that when a large group of believers who came to celebrate the beginning of the new year entered Vaishno Devi Bhawan Shrine, the stampede broke out.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by the stampede of Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in the condolence letter.
The official stated that a high-level investigation has been ordered.
