Bali will gradually reopen to tourists from October 14th
Indonesian Senior Cabinet Minister Luhut Pandjaitan stated on Monday, October 4 that Indonesia will reopen its tourist island Bali from October 14 for some international tourists, including tourists from China, New Zealand and Japan.
Luhut told reporters that Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar will be open to foreign tourists from that day, and tourists will need to quarantine for eight days at their own expense.
He said that the country’s reopening and relaxation of social restrictions were carried out in stages because Indonesia “does not want accidents”.
Indonesia is one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19 in Asia, with more than 4 million officially recorded cases and 142,000 deaths, although public health experts believe that the actual death toll is much higher.
However, the number of daily cases has plummeted from more than 56,000 at the peak of the second wave in mid-July this year to 1,100 on October 3.
The government also expressed its willingness to reopen the island to international tourists to help revitalize Bali’s hard-hit economy.
Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, emerged from its first recession in more than two decades in the second quarter, but the resurgence of COVID-19 and subsequent social restrictions may affect the recovery momentum.
