Broward County reached a $25 million settlement agreement with the victims of the Palan Massacre
Lawyer David Brill stated that the settlement of the lawsuit includes all the family members of the 17 victims, 16 of the 17 victims who were shot but surviving, and 19 victims with post-traumatic stress disorder or other diseases. .
When asked about the Broward County Public Schools’ comments that the matter is still under trial, Brill said that the two parties are finalizing the litigation settlement documents, accusing the board of negligence.
School system officials said they do not comment on pending lawsuits.
Brill said the agreement will not include the school board’s admission of any wrongdoing.
“This reconciliation provides them and other families and victims with a certain degree of justice and accountability,” he said. “The reconciliation is fair and frankly extraordinary,” he said.
Brill represents the parents of the four students who died and the fifth student who survived multiple gunshot wounds.
Brill told CNN that the final steps of the settlement are expected to be completed within two weeks.
If accepted, this request will begin to draw a legal chapter for a massacre that has left the community traumatized and sparked a large-scale national protest movement against gun violence in American schools.
Cruz’s defense team pleaded guilty a long time ago in exchange for life imprisonment without parole, but only if the prosecutor removes the death penalty from the table. Prosecutors rejected it, saying they were seeking the death penalty.
Last week, the Broward State Prosecutor’s Office issued a statement stating that “no guilty plea negotiations were held with the prosecutor” and “if he pleads guilty, he will still enter the punishment stage.”
CNN’s Rebekah Riess and Steve Almasy contributed to this report.
