Levine was sworn in on Tuesday to become the highest-level official of the U.S. Public Health Service.
She added: “As we create a diversified and more inclusive future, I hope today’s appointment will be the first of more appointments.”
Levine was also the first female four-star admiral to be commissioned by the USPHS.
“We are very proud to have Dr. Levine join the ranks of the 6,000 officers of the U.S. Public Health Service, who are working on the front lines of our country’s fight against disease and poor health,” said U.S. surgeon Dr. Vivek Murthy at the ceremony.
HHS Minister Xavier Becerra called Levine’s appointment “a big step towards national equality.”
Levine is a pediatrician and former Secretary of Health of Pennsylvania, and the sixth four-star admiral in the USPHS commissioned corps.
