A statement from Bogotá’s environmental authorities stated that at least 232 tarantulas, 67 cockroaches, 9 spider eggs and a scorpion with 7 cubs were confiscated at the capital’s El Dorado airport.
The statement said that the bugs were kept in more than 200 plastic containers in a suitcase.
Officials said that two German citizens were detained and will be prosecuted. They said that they brought these animals to Germany for academic purposes, but did not have a permit to collect and transport them.
The video showed some insects crawling around a box when the authorities inspected them. One can see a tarantula crawling on a wooden branch, while another worm crawling across its arm during the inspection by officials.
Carolina Urrutia, Bogota’s Minister of Environment, said that even if people intend to use wild animals for scientific research, they still need to obtain permission from the relevant authorities to take them out of the country.
