Justin Bieber calls for cancellation of the concert of the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancée in Saudi Arabia

“That’s why I am writing to you: cancel your performance in Saudi Arabia on December 5th,” Hatice Cengiz wrote on Saturday. “This is a unique opportunity to send a powerful message to the world that your name and talents will not be used to restore the reputation of a regime that killed critics.”

Bieber will make headlines in the Saudi Arabian Formula One race in December, and artists such as ASAP Rocky, David Guetta and Jason Derulo will also join the inaugural Grand Prix in Jeddah.

Cengiz urged Bieber to remember that he performed at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman himself.

“Without his consent, nothing important happened in Saudi Arabia, and of course there was no such important and flashy incident,” Cengiz wrote. “Your face even appeared on the event website, and his—my fiance’s executioner, Jamal.”

In 2018, a team of Saudi government agents murdered the journalist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, where he was preparing to take documents for his upcoming wedding with Cengiz. A US intelligence report found that the crown prince approved the operation, but the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement stating that it “completely rejected the negative, false and unacceptable assessment of the Saudi leadership in the report.”

Cengiz is not the only one criticizing the F1 race.

“Sports organizations like Formula One and the FIA cannot ignore the fact that they and their fans are used to cleanse the sport,” Benki Warden, director of sports monitoring at Human Rights Watch, told the Guardian.
In 2019, Nicki Minaj withdrew from a concert in Saudi Arabia. She said that she wanted to clearly support “female rights, LGBTQ community and freedom of speech.” Justin Bieber has not yet commented.

“If you refuse to be a pawn of MBS, your message will be loud and clear: I do not perform for dictators,” Cengiz wrote. “I choose justice and freedom over money.”
