WASHINGTON TOWN, NJ (CBS)-New Jersey’s elected Senator Edward Durr met with members of CAIR on Wednesday night after he posted an offensive tweet in 2019. Commercial truck driver Durr defeated State Senate Speaker Steve Sweeney in the election last week.
CAIR provided photos of them sitting down in Washington Town.

The meeting was held after Republican Durr apologized for his offensive tweets about Muslims in 2019, calling Islam a “false religion” and “hate worship.”
CAIR and the elected senator were interviewed by Eyewitness News after their meeting.

“I think we had a very fruitful dialogue, and I think it will be one of many dialogues that are promising,” said Selaedin Maksut, Executive Director of CAIR-NJ.
“That’s where it must be. You have to have dialogue, you can’t keep yourself closed. As long as people are talking, progress will be made, and I believe we have made some progress,” Durr said.
