NICU nurses work hard to give back to families with babies in the unit

Baton Rouge, Louisiana (WAFB)-As a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Women’s Hospital, Darian Buquet has been on duty, paying close attention to babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

“Many of our families are simply not ready for NICU to move in,” Buquet said. “Sometimes, premature birth happens without any notice.”

This is why every holiday, she collects and donates essential supplies for the neonatal intensive care unit to help the baby become stronger during the hospital stay, which can sometimes last up to nine months. Some of these donations, such as the development of sex toys, can play a role.

“It’s great to see family members express gratitude for everything we have done for their children, even if they are not at the bedside. They know that if they stay at home with their parents, they will receive the same care,” Buquet Added.

During the NICU hospitalization, as the babies grow, nurses will place them on swings and rocking chairs to help them build the necessary muscles before going home.

“Sometimes, our family, like I said, stayed here for four months, eight months, sometimes even a year,” said Amy Amy, a neonatal care coordinator in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Women’s Hospital. Said Amy Crochet. “If they work hard and stay here for their children, it’s difficult. Sometimes, they quit their jobs. Therefore, they don’t have the financial means to buy what they need, so we provide them.”

This is why they rely on donations from others to help these babies recover so that they can go home with their families.

“The neonatal intensive care unit is like a roller coaster. You have good days and bad days. You can take your baby one step forward and two steps back, so as long as there are these little things, there will be a smile on their faces, just to show work The people really care. We really want to provide the best service to the family,” Crochet explained.
