Police say the gang-related shooting killed 8-year-old Demetrius Stevenson, who was playing on the porch in Markham, a southern suburb of Chicago

Markham, Illinois (WLS) – According to police, an 8-year-old boy was shot to death on Monday while playing on a porch in the southern suburbs of the city and then died in Markham.

Family members have confirmed that the child is Demetrius Stevenson.

According to police, at least one man allegedly got out of the car and shot at his home in the 1500 block of Homan Avenue.

Police said the boy was shot in the head and died on the spot.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said: “They shot and killed an 8-year-old child who was unable to defend himself, and may not even have foreseen it.”

Officials said this was a gang-related shooting and the target was the boy’s 18-year-old brother.

He tried to rescue his brother and took him to the police.

According to the police, the unnamed 18-year-old man was arrested alone and is being questioned about the shooting.
