The jury found that 27-year-old Jordan Jamal Alvarado was guilty of shooting 33-year-old Keith Johnson in the parking lot of an apartment complex in northwest Harris County in July 2018.
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said: “It often happens that someone gets angry, picks up a gun and starts shooting, like in this case, murdering someone in their own home.” Rather than just walking away and staying away, this defendant also destroyed a family.”
The assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case, Chad Vickerscott, said the family is mourning the loss of “two brothers.”
“These two families grew up together,” Scott said. “They are very close. An eyewitness testified that it was like he had lost two brothers.”
Scott said that the two men had a quarrel, which later turned into a physical conflict. After a brief argument, the officials said that Alvarado had walked away, but returned with a gun a few minutes later and shot Johnson in the chest.
“Just losing a fist fight does not give you the right to kill,” Scott said.
After a four-day jury trial that ended on Wednesday, Alvarado was convicted. He faces a maximum life sentence, but a visiting judge sentenced him to 45 years in prison.
