Superman, Cinderella and Minions, characters from movies, comics and fairy tales, greeted children at a COVID-19 vaccination centre in Prague on Saturday to ease their nervousness about getting their vaccines.

Although coronavirus infections have eased over the past month, the Czech Republic is struggling to increase vaccination rates as it prepares for the Omicron coronavirus variant. Vaccination lags behind other EU countries.

Since children aged 5-11 are now eligible for vaccinations, costumed staff at one of the largest vaccination centres in the Czech capital help children who come to be vaccinated.

“We thought it would be better to just spend the day for the kids,” said Nikolay Melicharova, a staff member at the vaccination center, who dressed up as Snow White for the day. “And because kids are usually a little bit scared of getting vaccinated, we decided to have a fairy tale day that would be a little more enjoyable.”

About 62.4% of the country’s 10.7 million population is fully vaccinated, compared with 68.6% for the EU as a whole, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

The Czech Republic began vaccinating children aged 5-11 in mid-December. As of Friday, the age group had received more than 27,000 injections, according to the Ministry of Health.

Some children cried, but less so when talking to their favorite characters.

“I think it’s right (for vaccination). It’s the only way out of the pandemic,” said Jaroslav Kottner, who took his 9-year-old son to get the vaccine.
