A lawyer for Tesla asked a law firm to fire a lawyer or risk losing his job at the electric car maker led by Elon Musk, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.
The lawyer Tesla wants Cooley LLC to fire previously worked at the SEC. The lawyer interviewed Musk during the agency’s investigation into Tesla CEO’s 2018 claim that he secured funding to take Tesla private, according to the publication. The investigation was eventually settled, and Musk agreed to pay a $20 million fine and resign as Tesla chairman.
The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Tesla’s lawyers asked Cooley late last year to fire lawyers involved in the SEC investigation. The firm did not dismiss the partner.
Tesla has replaced Cooley or hired more lawyers in multiple cases since December, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Musk’s rocket company SpaceX has also stopped working with the law firm on regulatory issues, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Tesla, SpaceX and Cooley did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.
