The upcoming series is titled “Portrait of a Running Dog on Fire”, written by long-time serial writer Rob Lazebnik and his son Johnny Lazebnik, who inspired him to create Smithers’ original drama set.
Johnny LaZebnik told the New York Post this week: “Many times, gay romance is a secondary plot, or hinted or displayed in the form of some kind of montage or punchline.”
“And I think I’m really excited, through this episode, we can see-without spoilers too much-the beginning, the middle and who knows the ending of a gay relationship, really getting into the details of how gays date, how they meet, yes how is it like.”
According to the drama brief introduction: “Smithers found true love with a famous fashion designer, but will his new relationship destroy Springfield?”
His new boyfriend is fashion mogul Michael DeGraff, voiced by Victor Garber.
Garber, the openly gay star of Global Family Law, told the New York Post that he “admits that these stories are important” and added that every time he plays a gay role “will bring back some of the feelings of my youth that I can’t be gay. Actors.”
For many years, Smither’s sexual orientation has been an open secret on the show. Before his official season 27 appearance, his total fascination with Mr. Burns was portrayed in an elaborate fantasy sequence.
